In Recognition of Excellence: The Honor Societies at HCCC
Hudson County Community College is privileged to have many
students who not only excel academically, but also demonstrate outstanding
leadership in making a difference in our community. These students are
officially recognized through chapters of various honor societies we have on
campus.
Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) is the internationally acclaimed honor society for
students in community and junior colleges. The organization provides
members with opportunities to develop character, leadership and service,
to exchange ideas and ideals, and to stimulate interest in continuing
to achieve academic excellence. Beta Alpha Phi, HCCC's chapter of PTK,
is open to full- and part-time students who have earned 12 degree
credits at Hudson County Community College and have earned a cumulative
grade point average of 3.5 of higher.
The
National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) is the nation’s
largest leadership honor society. NSLS aims to build leaders of tomorrow by
helping people discover and achieve their goals. The Society offers
life-changing lectures from the nation's leading presenters and a community
where like-minded, success-oriented individuals come together and help one
another succeed. The Society also serves as a powerful force of good in the
greater community by encouraging and organizing action to better the world.
Sigma Kappa
Delta, which recognizes high
achievement in English language and literature in two-year institutions of
higher education, promotes literary
scholarship, provides service to the community and the College, and cultivates
friendship and fellowship among its members. Candidates for membership must
have completed a minimum of one college course (excluding developmental
courses) in English language or literature, have no grade lower than a B in
English, have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in general
scholarship, and have completed at least one semester or two quarters of
college course work for a cumulative total of 12 semester hours. Students are
not required to be English majors.
Psi Beta is the
National Honor Society in Psychology for community and junior colleges. In
addition to recognizing outstanding academic performance, Psi Beta provides its
members with opportunities to: learn more about the field; meet and interact
with professionals working in various areas of psychology; acquire leadership
skills; participate in community projects; and work with peers. To qualify for
Psi Beta, students must demonstrate a genuine interest in psychology, have
completed 12 degree credits, have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, and
have a B average or better in psychology courses.
SALUTE is the first national honor society
established for recognizing high achieving student veterans and military in two-year
and four-year institutions of higher education. Offering the unique opportunity
of a four-tier system, which offers and encourages the opportunity for students
to improve their GPA with the opportunity to advance to higher tiers within the
society during their academic careers. In order to be invited, students much
have earned 12 credits and at least a 3.0 GPA.
Chi Alpha Epsilon is the national honor society for students in the
Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) program. Chi Alpha Epsilon (XAE) was
formed to recognize the academic achievement of students admitted to
colleges and universities through non-traditional criteria/opportunity
programs. Eligible students must be full-time and hold a 3.0 cumulative
GPA for two consecutive semesters. Students are inducted each semester
in a private initiation ceremony, where they receive a certificate,
graduation cords and ritual materials for each inductee. The public
pinning portion of the XAE induction takes place immediately after the
private ceremony.
